An Angel

i282600889611922014._szw1280h1280_There are angels who live amongst us. I have been fortunate enough to not only get to know a few but also to number them among my friends. One of the loveliest of them all is Adriana Stovall.

Life has a way of giving us what we need when we need it. I was working at Revere Middle School and both my boss, David Kendler, and his secretary, Eloisa Diosdado, moved to Sharpstown High School. They wanted me to go with them but I had an inner feeling that I needed to stay where I was. I was so sad to see my good friends leave. David had been instrumental in changing the course of my career. To say that I felt forever grateful to him is an understatement. Furthermore, Eloisa and I had been good friends for many years. We even rode to school together and I had taught both of her children. I knew that I would miss them terribly and I was so afraid of who might take their places. I needn’t have worried! It’s far too easy to hear the litany, feel a moment of sadness, and then continue with our lives. They are not usually people that we know which makes them more symbolic to us than concrete. For their families and friends memories of them will live forever. These were real people just like you and me. They might have been one of our brothers or sisters, mothers or fathers, sons or daughters. Throughout the history of our country courageous individuals have joined the military, sometimes because they were drafted and often because they volunteered. All of them understood the dangers but always believed that they would one day come home. Far too many did so in flag draped coffins, casualties of the conflicts in which they fought.  Continue reading “Thank You”

Mazel Tov

i282600889606780111._szw1280h1280_There comes a moment in life when time becomes more and more precious. There is a realization that one’s end may come sooner rather than later. Relationships and adventures are like treasures, not to be taken for granted. As someone who is watching the acceleration of time and enduring the loss of special people more and more frequently, I understand the urge to snatch happiness wherever it may be found. So it was with a spirit of great joy that I attended a quite wonderful and special wedding in Galveston this past weekend. Continue reading “Mazel Tov”
