Mind Mazes

(Note to my readers…Most of this blog was written on Friday night when insomnia and a case of heartburn kicked in to interrupt my sleep. A few additions and deletions came in the editing process this morning when my mind was a bit more focused and less tired. Forthwith is the kind of rambling that only night time during a full moon is capable of producing. Bear with me on this one.)

There are times when I try to write without any idea of what my topic will be. It is just a kind of challenge that I give myself. I start spewing words on the page hoping that something sticks. Often I compose a few sentences and realize that I am just blathering. If I manage to keep stringing enough thoughts together I eventually find the body of an essay but tonight nothing coherent comes to mind. Right now is the hour when only night owls and vampires are still awake but I can tell that if I lie down I will be roused from my dreams at some point with a mega bad case of heartburn. It’s not anything to worry about. It happens sometimes but it really really hurts so I don’t like to go there if I don’t have to. I have a gigantic wedge pillow that I use once in a great while to forestall such an attack but it’s not particularly comfortable and besides it’s Friday night and I have no obligations or appointments until noon tomorrow so if I have to stay up a bit late I will be able to sleep longer in the morning. So here I am trying to occupy my mind without making too much noise since Mike is already sound asleep. Unfortunately the only topics that come to mind are seemingly unconnected ideas that are rattling around in my brain.  Continue reading “Mind Mazes”

Conquering Our Fears

i282600889620853429._szw1280h1280_This is a sacred time of year. For Christians it is Holy Week, an occasion to remember the life, suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He walked among us as a human being but many of us believe that He was truly the Son of God. He attempted to teach us how to live with one another. His message was simple but so difficult to follow. He only asked us to love our neighbors just as we love ourselves. He showed us how to do this by example. He modeled the behavior that He wanted us to also have. In the end even this good man who had done no harm to anyone was sentenced to death, executed like a criminal. In a last act of extreme compassion He forgave the thief who was penitent and the people who were responsible for killing Him. He commended His spirit into the hands of God, His Father. He died for all of us, not just some. We sometimes forget that He was so inclusive.

We have suffered of late. We see the work of terrorists and we wonder what we can do, what we must do. We are shaken. We want to answer hate with love but we worry that to do so is naive and will only make things worse. Then again, we cringe at the idea of anger and force, even understanding that sometimes it is the only way to be safe. We are confused. In our anxious state of mind we strike out at one another. We attempt to find someone or some group to blame for what is happening. We exclaim that our leaders have let us down. Our hearts are sickened and we want to ignore the problems but we know that to do so will solve nothing. It is a dilemma and we worry that the path that we choose may be wrong.   Continue reading “Conquering Our Fears”

Love is the Answer

i282600889620453038._szw1280h1280_It’s spring break time and what could be more wonderful than that? I had firmly decided that we all need a vacation from politics and the craziness that seems to be defining this election cycle. I had set aside my concerns about the outcome of the political primaries and began to understand the wisdom of the old saying, “Que sera sera.” I’ve certainly seen enough in my lifetime to realize that the good, the bad and the ugly tend to come and go with the wind. I settled into a determination to just have a good time in this beautiful Easter season and celebrated my victory over my own indignation by watching a James Bond movie on Friday realizing that escape is often quite therapeutic.   Continue reading “Love is the Answer”

Common Ground

i282600889620249547._szw1280h1280_It seems that periodically we humans as a group devolve just a bit. We temporarily lose our integrity, good manners and compassion. Those tend to be very dangerous times when we become angry and suspicious of anyone not like ourselves. We fall for arguments that blame our woes on certain groups. Somehow we aren’t as nice to one another as we ought to be.

The Germans lived in one of the most sophisticated and learned societies on earth. After World War I the country fell apart at about the same time that ugliness reared its head all around the world. There was a nationalistic, protectionist fervor across the globe that some say resulted in the Great Depression and only deepened as economies tumbled into a death spiral. Isolationism ruled the day. Literally every nation had the attitude that the needs of the natural born citizens had to come first. There was great suspicion of anyone who was different. In Germany a demagogue promised a way out of the need and want, a better future, a stronger country. The people were hungry and ready to try anything. They hailed their leader as a savior little realizing that the price of their salvation would be one of the most horrific chapters in the story of mankind.   Continue reading “Common Ground”

If Not Now, When?

i282600889619931598._szw1280h1280_I’ve been sitting on a blog topic that is dear to my heart for quite sometime now. I suppose that I realize that the only people who will agree with my thoughts on this subject are those who are already in my choir. In other words there is little chance that I will change someone’s mind but I have reached a point where I won’t be able to live with myself if I don’t at least try.

The last many months of the Presidential nomination process have been disturbing to me, particularly the campaign of Donald Trump. Perhaps more than any of his hair brained ideas I am most concerned about the comments that he has made regarding immigration. His hyperbole in describing many of the people from Mexico as “criminals and rapists” should have automatically disqualified him from consideration, but instead they have become the cornerstone of his platform. The fact that he continues to dominate the Republican race has been rather depressing to me. In fact I’ve spent the day after Super Tuesday attempting to distract myself from the reality of the current situation, all to no avail. Whether I am looking for birthday presents for a niece and nephew or taking my daily walk I keep wondering how so many Americans can possibly support such a horrible man.
